HMRC trials use of QR codes
HMRC has recently provided us with an update about using QR codes which will allow individuals with smart phones to use the codes to access further information.
HMRC’s update is as follows:
“During February 2023, we will add a QR code to the SA250 welcome letter (and notes) which links to key GOV.UK Self Assessment pages where customers can find all the information they need. This includes click access to our Digital Assistant and contact information.
“This is part of a trial to test customer’s use of QR codes, which will include removing the contact number from the SA250, to encourage use of our digital routes over the Helplines.
Meeting the needs of our customers
“Our customers’ expectations have changed over the last couple of years’, and they need to access our services when it suits them. So, we’re exploring options for our customers to use the channel that best suits and meets their needs."
“Directing our customers to our digital services means that they can access the information they need quickly and easily, and our advisers can better serve customers with more complex queries to help them get things right. Customers will still be able to contact our helplines directly using the helpline numbers from our contact details on GOV.UK.
“We have considered all security risks before making any changes.”
While we welcome the introduction of easier ways to access information, to be able to use a QR code the taxpayer needs to have a smart phone, tablet or similar device. We are concerned that the QR code has been included in place of a telephone number which may disadvantage digitally excluded taxpayers.
