Have you been thinking about volunteering?
ATT's Council, Steering Groups and Committees and the branch network are all run by members, volunteers who offer their time and expertise to provide essential direction, leadership, guidance and support to the Association.
Members also help to inspire the next generation by visiting schools, colleges, universities and careers fairs to help young people understand the working world of tax. You can find further information about this here.
Volunteering is a great way to enhance and develop new skills, gain valuable experience and make a contribution to the wider profession, government and public as a whole.
Whether you are a student, newly qualified, a long-standing or retired member, it's never too early or late in your career to volunteer and we have exciting opportunities for you to join our Branch and National Steering Groups and Committees.
What does being a volunteer mean for you?
We offer a wide range of opportunities to suit all levels of skills and experience, both in the Branch network and Steering Groups and Committees of Council. The role and level of personal commitment will vary according to the activity and your other commitments but you should be prepared to:
- Attend meetings and contribute to the work of whichever Steering Group or Committee you join.
- Contribute to the development of the group's activities by offering professional comment and advice on current issues and developments from your own perspective and sharing personal experiences.
- Read meeting papers in advance of meetings. Agendas and papers relating to all meetings are circulated electronically at least one week prior to the meeting.
- You owe a duty of confidentiality to the Association and any information acquired during your volunteering activities must not be communicated outside of ATT unless you are informed otherwise.

Most of our Committees and Steering Groups meet four times a year. Some meetings are held at our Head Office in London but there is always the opportunity to join our meetings virtually. Any expenses relating to travel and subsistence on Association business are reimbursed, in accordance with our expenses policy. Please note that as this is a voluntary role with a charity, we are not in a position to pay you a fee for attending meetings or offer reimbursement for any loss of income, child care expenses etc.
Next steps
If you are interested in getting involved, please contact us, saying which group you would be interested in and why. If you are particularly interested in serving on Technical Steering Group or VAT Sub-Group, please see here for additional information about volunteering for these particular groups.
We will give you any further information you need and put you in touch with the relevant Chair of the Steering Group/Committee. Once you know more and are happy with the commitment you will need to make, we will ask you to submit a brief CV or direct us to your LinkedIn page so that we can learn a little more about you before we invite you to attend a meeting.
