ATT discuss priorities for the tax system with the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury
The ATT were pleased to be invited to a roundtable discussion at the Treasury on 24 July to discuss priorities for reforms to the tax system, and how it can support economic growth.
The meeting was organised and chaired by James Murray MP, the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, who invited views from a range of external stakeholders on their priorities for the tax system under the new Government.
Based on members' feedbackand our wider engagement, the ATT's key suggestions were:
- Improving HMRC service standards
- Expanding access to digital services and ensuring agents can see and do everything their clients can online
- Boosting taxpayer confidence by avoiding frequent changes in tax policy
- Consulting on ways to address 'cliff edges' in the tax system which are a disincentive to growth
- Tackling the issue of IR35 and 'false' self-employment to provide greater certainty over employment status and its implications for tax
- Reviewing small fixed allowances and exemptions to ensure their value is not eroded by inflation.
Further details of the above priorities can be found in our follow-up letter to the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, which was delivered after the meeting.
