How to spot HMRC scams

Fraudsters are very resourceful, and one of their tactics is to pretend to be HMRC in order to get money or personal information from taxpayers.  These ‘phishing attacks’ can take many forms – for example a recorded phone message telling you to pay an amount of money urgently, or a text or email saying you are due a tax refund and asking you to click on a link to claim it.

Some of these scams are quite sophisticated, making it hard to tell what is and isn’t a genuine message.

We’ve produced a short video to help taxpayers spot and stop HMRC scams.  This sets out common features of HMRC scams, the simple steps to take if you’re unsure whether a message is genuine or not, and what to do if you think you’ve received a scam message.
