Following positive feedback from users, the Government has extended the temporary adjustments allowing ‘right to work’ checks to be carried out remotely. These measures had previously been due to expire on 1 April 2022, but will now be extended until 30 September 2022.
The temporary adjustment measures will run in parallel with a new approach due to start on 6 April 2022 which allows employers to use Identification Document Validation Technology (IDVT) to carry out digital checks on British and Irish citizens who hold a valid passport. The idea is this will give employers time to transition to the new approach.
In the meantime, the adjusted process allows
- checks to be carried out over video calls
- job applicants and existing workers to send scanned documents or a photo of documents for checks using email or a mobile app, rather than sending originals
- use of the Home Office Employer Checking Service if a prospective or existing employee cannot provide any of the accepted documents
