Company Directors: payroll and you

Dealing with the payroll rules for directors can be complicated and difficult to get your head around. HMRC recently ran a webinar for company directors wanting to know more about their responsibilities to HMRC. You can watch a recording – or sign up for the next live webinar on this or other topics – via the guidance pages HMRC email updates, videos and webinars for company directors.

The webinar follows Max, an architect who has decided to set up his own business as a limited company. Max has an accountant, but still wants to know more about his responsibilities as a director and understand what his accountant will be doing on his behalf.

The webinar takes Max through the following main areas:

  • Understanding a director’s responsibilities to HMRC
  • Making payments to directors, the Income Tax and National Insurance that directors pay and the payroll information that has to be submitted to HMRC
  • The different types of expenses and benefits that might be paid to directors
  • Keeping records – what to keep and how long to keep them for

The ‘live’ webinars include a number of ‘polls’ in which attendees are encouraged to take part. The individual responses to the polls are not made public, but the overall figures shown as a percentage of the number of delegates is shared. These polls give helpful feedback to HMRC and help inform them where changes or additional guidance is needed.

HMRC also have also produced a range of other guidance material for company directors, from subscribing for regular email updates to YouTube videos and additional webinars.
