Connor Whelan, Tax Manager at Mercedes-Benz, tells us why he chose a career in tax and how the ATT qualification has helped him in his career.
How are you changing the face of tax?
- I hope to improve the overall perception of tax functions, by demonstrating the true business value of reducing risk and cost, but also at pace with character, vibrance and enthusiasm.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
- Approachable, ambitious and conscientious.
Why did you pursue a career in tax tax?
- Money, business and the government has always been of interest to me, and so exploring the tax profession was a natural choice. A career in tax allows me to use and build a variety of skills within a highly regarded and reputable profession. The profession offers huge development and progression opportunities which is very important to me. Furthermore, the profession is, and always will be, highly sought after, so the job security that comes with a tax career is an added benefit.
What are the highlights of your career to date?
- The variety! A career in tax has enabled me to work alongside high net worth individuals, innovative small business owners undertaking pioneering research and development projects and, more recently, in house at a global corporate covering many areas both domestically and internationally.
- While it might sound trite, it has been a highlight and privilege to work alongside many knowledgeable, intelligent and inspiring tax professionals.
Why is the ATT qualification important?
The world of taxation can be complex, and it is crucial that any tax professional is adept with the complexities that the industry may present. The ATT qualification offers an excellent foundation in taxation, covering a broad range of disciplines and consequently demonstrates your level of professional knowledge and standards to your peers, employers and client alike.
What advice would you give to people starting off in their career?
In any career, tax or otherwise, never be afraid to ask questions!
